2025 African Weightlifting Championships | Highlights

  • 22 countries took part in this year's African Weightlifting Championships, a record high for the region.
  • Three participating countries, Liberia, Mauritania, and Cape Verde, had never sent athletes to an International Weightlifting Federation meet before.
  • Despite winning more team points than any other country, Tunisia trailed Nigeria in medal count, 12 to 13.
  • 147 kilograms separated the 109-kilogram gold and silver medalists in the total; 367 to 220.
  • Abdelrahman Mohamed Younes (M81, EGY) won with a 345-kilogram total — the only men's participant whose result would have landed him on the podium at the recent European Weightlifting Championships.
  • Onome Didih (55, NGR), Rafiatu Lawal (59, NGR), and Sarah Matthew's (76, NGR) totals would have put them on the European women's podium, with Matthew's 237 besting 76-kilo winner Genna Toko Kegne by four.
  • Guinea's Kekoura Traoure, the +109-kilogram bronze medalist, was the only male competitor in any category to go six-for-six.
  • Similarly, Zeineb Naoui (87, TUN) who won silver, was the only woman to have a flawless day on the platform.
  • Sara Samir Ahmed (76, EGY), Africa's most dominant active weightlifter, did not compete at this event.
