2025 European Weightlifting Championships Preview
Here’s why we’re so excited about this year’s European Weightlifting Championships: In June, the International Weightlifting Federation’s new batch of weight categories will take effect, while the existing classes will be expunged.
- Getting Specific: The 2025 EWC is the final opportunity for any Senior athletes (Youth & Junior Worlds are coming up at the end of the month) to etch their names into the record books. Those records must then hold through the Asian Weightlifting Championships in May.
But Chisinau won’t just be about battling for new world records — here are a few of the athletes and events we’re most excited to see:
- Marin Robu (MDA), who finished a controversial fourth in the Men’s 89-kilogram event in Paris, will perform for his home crowd in Chisinau. He sits atop the entrants list with a 380-kilogram total.
- Mihaela Cambei (ROU) stunned with her silver-medal performance at the 2024 Olympics. She leads the 49-kilogram entries with a 200-kilogram total; it’ll be her first appearance on stage since Paris, and she’s gunning for her third straight European title.
- Varazdat Lalayan (ARM) is filling the void left by seven-time European Champion Lasha Talakhadze. Lalayan leads the super-heavyweight entry totals by a 30-kilogram margin.
- Eyglo Sturludottir (ISL) is the leading entrant in the Women’s 71-kilogram division. Iceland hasn’t won a Senior European medal in the sport’s modern history — Sturludottir could be the first.
- The Men’s 61-kilogram division won’t see any world records, but there is a four-way tie at the top of the entry totals. Armenia, Georgia, Turkey, and two Bulgarian athletes have all entered at 280 kilograms, heralding a hotly competitive session.
- Rebeka Koha (LAT) will end her six-year hiatus from the international weightlifting scene at this European Weightlifting Championships. Koha, now Ibrahima, will lift in the 59-kilogram division.
- Fan-favorite Team Italy boasts a 10-athlete roster, including big names like Giulia Miserendino, Oscar Martinez, and several newcomers to the Senior circuit.
- Emily Campbell (GBR) looks poised to run away with her fifth consecutive European Weightlifting Championships victory in the Women’s +87-kilogram event. Campbell has a 43-kilogram lead on the number-two entrant.
- In 2024, Karlos Nasar (BUL) climbed every mountain in weightlifting. The Olympic Champion and triple world record holder is entered at 96 kilograms; an indication that Nasar plans to bulk up for the 98-kilogram division?
- Dadas Dadashbayli (AZE) is on a hot streak, having made the podium at his last five international competitions. He’s publicly signaled his intent to win gold in Los Angeles in 2028 — a win in the 109-kilogram category would set the tone, but Dadashbayli will need to beat both Simon Martirosyan and Garik Karapetyan of Armenia to claim gold.
You can find the entry book here.
Weightlifting House will provide up-to-the-hour results for each weight class at the European Weightlifting Championships. Stay tuned!
