2026 European Weightlifting Championships Battles
Europe’s best will go blow-for-blow in Batumi. Old rivalries reignite; newcomers look to etch themselves into the record books before they slam shut this summer.
Massidda (ITA) v. Ozbek (TUR)
Team Italy’s best athlete has been absent since he bombed out in Paris. After shaking off the rust at European Juniors last fall, Sergio told us he’s now laser-focused on knocking out the World Champion: “I don’t intend to arrive unprepared.”
Ivzhenko (UKR) v. Konotop (UKR)
Ivzhenko stepped up when Konotop took a hiatus after Paris. Olha is younger and has momentum, but Kamila has a 236@59 on her resume. There are only two questions; is Konotop back to her old self, and can either Ukrainian outlift Armenia’s Aleksandra Grigoryan, who is rapidly improving her total?
Women’s 63KG
Six athletes entered within five kilograms of each other.
Aysel Ozkan (TUR) leads by one kilogram at 225.
Alina Shchapanava (AIN) has 224, but hasn’t lifted internationally in two years.
Dziyana Maiseyevich (AIN) came fourth last year and also declared 224.
Martina Chiacchio (ITA) entered 8 above her Worlds ‘25 total of 215.
Andreea Cotruta (ROU) last lifted 214@63, but is in at 220.
Maelyn Michel (FRA) hasn’t totaled above 195 internationally, but recently snatched 100KG at a French competition. She’s in at 220.
Only three can make the podium.
Almammadov (AZE) v. Karapetyan (ARM)
Two Junior phenoms will collide for gold; both won their categories at European Juniors last fall. Ravin Almammadov has a best of 340@79—Tigran Karapetyan has 321@71, but is making his debut at a heavier weight.
Ylisoini (FIN) v. Dombrovska (UKR)
Janette and Iryna are two of the most popular light-heavyweight athletes in Europe. Ylisoini is on a steady climb at Europeans; 13th in 2023, 7th in ‘24, and fourth last year.
Dombrovska lags a bit in the total, but has been practicing a more consistent jerk technique behind the scenes. Will it be enough, or will Finland have its first European Champion since 1970?
Rostami (KOS) v. Robu (MDA)
It all came crashing down for Marin last year when Raphael Friedrich pulled off an upset win on Robu’s home turf in Chisinau. He feels overdue for gold, but faces one of the most tenured competitors of the last 20 years in the now Kosovo-aligned Kianoush.
Here’s the final entry list.
These clashes and more are live on WLHOUSE TV this month. Stay tuned.
