Karlos Nasar European Weightlifting Championships

Karlos Nasar Bulks Up to Conquer European Weightlifting Championships

Karlos Nasar rejoiced, for there were more worlds to conquer — after climbing every mountain weightlifting has to offer in 2024, Nasar returned to the international stage at the 2025 European Weightlifting Championships.

  • Remind Me: Last year, Nasar won four of the world's most prestigious weightlifting competitions; the European Champs, World Cup, Olympic Games, and World Championships.

We'll spoil the obvious: He won. But not in the Men's 89-kilogram category, where Nasar has sat upon his throne since 2023.

With the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) expected to reorganize the men's categories, and having already bagged all three world records, Nasar has committed to bulking up to a heavier class.

Nasar had lifted at a heavier weight category before at Germany's multi-sport Bundesliga events, but the '25 European Weightlifting Championships marked his official debut.

Looking as confident as ever and significantly bulkier, weighing a hair below 94 kilograms, Nasar pulled well ahead of the pack on his openers en route to setting his first world record in the division and separating himself from the field by 14 kilograms at the halfway mark.

Karlos Nasar (96KG)

  • Snatch: 174, 180, 188 WR
  • Clean & Jerk: 210, 220, 229
  • Total: 417 WR

Karlos Nasar (96KG) | Session Recap

Nasar initially declared a modest 165-kilogram opening attempt before repeatedly bumping up as the field thinned. He appeared on stage for 174, 180, and then his team stalled for time to give him enough rest to put 188 kilograms overhead, erasing the existing record which had stood for over two years.

  • Modern History: The previous snatch record at 96 belonged to Colombian-turned-Bahraini Lesman Paredes, who hit it at the World Championships in 2022. Nasar was there as well as an 89, where he bombed out for the first and only time on a Senior stage.

With the stadium behind him, Nasar took three good attempts in the clean & jerk in sequence, ending with a new world record in the total of 417 — erasing Iran's Sohrab Moradi, whose record had stood for nearly eight years.
